Engine Coolant Guide: Color is Just Marketing, Chemistry is What Matters Why the wrong coolant can destroy your engine
Coolant color is an irrelevant detail. What matters are the chemical inhibitors and compliance with the manufacturer's specification. Incorrect mixing of different technologies leads to cooling system degradation and eventual engine failure.
Technical Classification & Mixability
| Category | Types | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Systems | G12, G12+, G12++, G13 | Fully compatible with each other |
| Older Systems | IAT (G11) | Not compatible with OAT |
| ⚠️ High-Risk Mix | IAT + OAT | IMMEDIATE GEL FORMATION |
Operating Risks & Diagnostics
- Cavitation: Vibration of cylinder liners without proper additives (SCA) leads to material destruction of the liners.
- Boiling Point: Quality coolant raises the boiling point to 120°C (248°F). With plain water, cavitation occurs under load and cooling efficiency is lost.
- Galvanic Corrosion: Degraded coolant acts as an electrolyte. Grizzly Tip: Measure the voltage between the engine block and the coolant with a multimeter. A reading above 0.3V indicates immediate replacement is needed.
Service Procedure
- Always follow the specification: Always verify the OEM specification (e.g., DQC CC-14, JD Cool-Gard II). Compliance with the specification is more important than color.
- Concentrate vs. Ready-mix: Use concentrates diluted with distilled water at a 50:50 ratio.
- OEM equivalents: Brands like Fuchs produce coolants directly for OEMs. An identical specification from a reputable manufacturer is a fully valid replacement.
"What if you knew that the wrong coolant could destroy an engine in a year – an engine that would otherwise last decades?
Would that change how carefully you choose your coolant?"
Need to know which coolant specification is prescribed for your specific engine?
Grizzly Courage Code helps you identify the correct specification and coolant type based on your machine. Enter the model and year of manufacture – we'll tell you what belongs in the radiator to prevent costly repairs.

Don't let cheap coolant destroy your engine.
The right specification and quality inhibitors are the difference between an engine that lasts thousands of hours and one that ends up as scrap. Consult us – we know what works in practice, not just in the lab.
Diagnostics isn't about what we know. It's about what you need to know.
